Looking Forward: Consultation
At Sexual Wholeness, our language reflects our values and mission to support individuals and couples in their journey toward sexual health and harmony. One term you might notice is our preference for "consultant" rather than "supervisor". This choice is intentional and deeply connected to our approach to care and collaboration.
Here’s why:
Foster Collaboration
We believe that personal growth is a partnership. The term "consultant" embodies the idea of working "with" you, not "over" you. Together, we explore, learn, and apply principles that empower you to work with your clients from a wholistic, faith-focused approach.
Highlight Expertise, Not Authority
A "consultant" is a guide and a resource—someone who brings expertise to the table without imposing authority. This ensures you feel supported and respected as an equal in the process, rather than evaluated or judged.
Additionally, a consultant is not legally responsible for your work like a traditional supervisor of record with your state. Pre-licensed members working toward certification should also be working toward licensure with an approved supervisor within their licensing requirements. Those already licensed assume full responsibility of their work under their own liability insurance.
Create a Safe and Welcoming Space
Talking about sexual wholeness can be deeply personal. We want our language to reflect a space of safety, warmth, and understanding. "Consultant" has a softer, more inviting tone than "supervisor", encouraging open dialogue and trust.
Promote Ownership of Your Journey
Ultimately, your journey and therapeutic style are your own. We don't seek to replicate versions of us to the masses but want to empower the story God is writing in your life with your work and clients. By using the term "consultant", we emphasize that while we are here to provide insight and support, you are the one in the driver’s seat. This empowers you to take ownership of your methodology when seeing clients.
