Steps to Certification
Begin the Journey: General/Graduate Student Member

ABCST Certification requires 150 hours of graduate-level training in Sexuality and Sex Therapy. Training must be provided by recognized educational institutions, clinicians, clinical groups, or ABCST Approved training organizations. The ISW Program meets all sex therapy training requirements for certification. ABCST currently recognizes 3 pathways to meet educational, clinical, & consultation requirements:

Sex Therapy Associate membership is available to General Members who have completed the required hours of sex therapy training:
For fully licensed Members (able to practice independently in their state of practice): 30 hours of sex therapy training.
For Members with an associate’s license/intern license (not yet fully licensed to practice independently in their state of practice): 60 hours of sex therapy training.
While not required to advance to Sex Therapy Associate, it is recommended that the potential applicant begins consultation with an ABCST approved Consultant. Find out more HERE.

Advance to an ABCST Sex Therapy Associate
The potential applicant must have completed:
150 Hours of Sex Therapy Training.
200 direct client hours in which the primary focus of therapy is a sexual issue. ABCST membership is required prior to beginning to collect direct client hours.
50 hours of case consultation with an ABCST approved consultant.
Submission of a 6-10 page paper reflecting the applicant’s personal theology of sex.
At least one Professional Reference and at least one Faith and Character Reference.

Become an ABCST Certified Sex Therapist
If you are interested in becoming an ABCST Certified Christian Sex Therapist, we highly recommend you download the Certification Application and begin documenting your progress as you move through the requirements.
When all requirements are met, please scan and submit your application.
Keep a copy for your records.
CST Application
Applicants are held to the requirements of the most recent application at the time of submission. Please check regularly for updates.
Consultation Requirements
Applicants must document at least 50 hours of consultation with an ABCST Approved Consultant and must be completed within a five-year (60 month) period of time.
